Blog Action Day 2011 #BAD11

I am proud to be taking part in Blog Action Day OCT 16 2011 www.blogactionday.org

I'm taking a break from my RUNNING stories to share with you my #FOOD experience in support of #BAD11 (www.blogactionday.org).

Today, I attended the second day of the Hmong New Year Festival in Oroville, CA and what glorious day it was! This is my second year attending the festival and so I decided to bring along some friends this time. It was wonderful to be able to share wonderful food with other people. I think the thing that excites me the most is the Hmong food is so similar to Filipino food (perhaps also due to their close geological location) and every dish, every flavor, really hits home.

Taste of some Thai
Enjoying a taste of Thai food.

Pork BBQ and Black Rice
Here is some AMAZING Pork BBQ over Black Rice.

Sweet Roll
Finishing it off with the best Sweet Roll.

Happy Time!
Nothing like a cool sweet drink to wash it down.

Hmong New Year Festival
For the road.

Hmong New Year Festival
Iced Coffee and Sweet Pink drink. So hard to decide.

Hmong Sausage over Black Rice
Day 2: Hmong Sausage and American Sausage over Black rice (with some really spicy sauce)

Papaya Salad
Papaya Salad: papaya with shrimp paste, shrimp sauce, and spices. Instantly hit home for me!

Sweet Drink to go
Similar way to enjoy drinks back in the Philippines! This Hmong Sweet drink is with a bit of cream and is served cold.

Later in the day, we decided to try a Tea/Coffee shop in the area. It has been around for a while but we never really had the opportunity to try it out. What a great day to end the day!

Training Day 7: Rest

After going grocery shopping at Trader Joe's I went to bed quite early last night (at 8pm to be exact). I was happy to be tired enough to actually sleep at a fairly decent hour. But around 1am, I woke up and could not go back to bed. So I decided to cook for the rest of the week and here's what I made:

Trader Joe's has a wonderful tomato basil marinara sauce. What I did though was I sauteed some garlic then cooked the ground turkey in with that before adding the marinara sauce.

Next up: is Pesto Linguine with broccoli and pine nuts. This is my first time using linguine noodles for this particular dish. Normally, I use spaghetti noodles which now that I think about it, rather prefer. I may have over cooked the linguine causing it to be quite starchy--quite upsetting really.

So these are my meals for the week, and lots of salad and other delightful food I will most likely share with you.

Have a great Sunday! Though it's my "rest day" I'm definitely going for a hike.

Hike Update:

What a wonderful day! Here are some photos I'd like to share with you:

8.7.11

It was a rather lazy day and after a wonderful dinner: Summer produce fresh from the garden: tomatoes, grilled zucchini, grilled eggplant, potatoes with basil, as well as BBQ chicken marinated in Trader Joe's pineapple, teriyaki marinade, and of course the pesto linguine I made earlier it couldn't have more delightful!

For dessert, I indulged a little:

8.7.11
Apple cinnamon cake and chocolate bunt cake. But I don't feel guilty. I biked a little, swam a little, and hiked as well. The great outdoors was my buddy today and I had a lot of fun.

Now for the big-time training tomorrow! Here we go!

Juice Fast Day 3: Cutting it Short

Weight Gained: 1 lbs
Weight Lost: 0 lbs

Breakfast
  • Naked Juice: Mighty Mango
Lunch
  • Naked Juice: Protein Juice
Dinner
  • Tandoori Chicken, salad, and rice

I'm not going to lie. The Juice fast isn't going well for me. I'm not committed. I've been cutting corners buying juice instead which really isn't really the point is it? Plus, after a crappy run, I realized that I really need the calories; I NEED the energy.

I have to say though that it's quite nice being able to lose 3lbs! Maybe I have something here. Maybe I'll continue to juice for dinner but I'm no longer holding back breakfast and lunch.

Fast: DONE!
