Day 18 of 365: "It's the End of the World as we Know it and

21st Dec. 2012
It's the end if the world, supposedly.

...and yet I'm still here...and eating away.

My hopes of having some sort of routine failed today.

1st: I woke up late.
2nd: We had a heavy (yet delightful lunch)
3rd: My attempt to get a hardcore swim workout failed because the water was freeeeezing!
4th: I was surprisingly very, very hungry today. All I could think about was TOAST...and BUTTER!

Anyhow, tomorrow is a new day. I know, it's a bit ambitious to start a routine while in vacation. But I realized that IF I REALLY, TRULY WANT IT TO HAPPEN, IT'S UP TO ME TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

So for today's end-of-the-world feast:
Malaysian Food
Toast
Banana
Chocolates
Dessert pudding
Hotdog sandwich
Two hot chocolates
And plenty of water.

Tomorrow morning, I'm going to the gym. I'm getting my routine ON!

Day 17 of 365: Friends and Food

20th Dec. 2012
Reunion Time...that also means food time!

So I had a wonderful evening with my fantastic friends from high school when it occurred to me, I need a routine.

No really, I NEED A ROUTINE!

The hubby and I had a late breakfast and I mean LATE. And yes, it was because of me. Having woken up at 11am I pretty much lounged about and was only ready to go at around 3pm.

Honestly, I need a routine and here's why:

1. A routine keeps you on track with meals. That means your glucose doesn't affect you which also means you turn into a beast by the time you realize how hungry you are. Plus, you don't overeat.

2. You don't feel lost or confused in what to do that day. Yes, that included exercise in the equation.

Speaking of which...

3. A routine also means having schedules a work out in your day.

Today we walked to and fro our destinations and it was great. We also saved a whole lot of money because we didn't pay for a cab.

4. A routine keeps you in check and on track regardless of whether or not you're on vacation.

Day 16 of 365: Dehydration on Vacation

19th Dec. 2012
Dehydration on Vacation

Sometimes you forget about be ONE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE: WATER and plenty of it!

Today, I had to pee in a cup. Yes, you read that correctly. As part of acquiring a driver's license here in the Philippines, one of the things you have to go through is a medical exam and yes, that includes a urine sample. Thanks to that I realized how dehydrated I was.

Despite water being the only thing I drink anymore (okay maybe coffee too), I discovered I still haven't been drinking as much. What a toll this pits on my body! The irritability, the feeling of almost passing out, the heat all leads up to this: dehydration.

The food may seem like a lot but again, I really didn't have much. The heat was really getting to me. Not much of an appetite.

No exercise again today. Unless i count the 15-minute walk from the mall to my grandma's. Tomorrow is definitely going to be a hardcore workout. Watch out all! I'm still here!

Day 15 of 365: Vacation Food

18th Dec. 2012
Vacation and Food

It's been tough. I'm not going to lie. As much as I TRY TRY TRY to have something healthy, all fails to happen.

Especially with a family that loves to eat...about anything and everything. I'm feeling a bit sick. I am also disliking fried, fast food.

So what did I do? Small portions. That's right! Pat on the back for me! Yup! To avoid feeling like crap, I pretty much bit into each and everything and left it at that. I ate until I reached just about full (not stuffed) and DONE!

No exercise today I'm afraid.
Definitely having withdrawals!

Day 14 of 365: On Traveling

17th Dec. 2012
While on the Road or in the Air

It's hard to adjust to a new environment t sometimes. I know his to be true having moved every 5 years. Food and staying active are the most affected by such changes.

By this I mean seeking COMFORT FOOD.

We headed for Manila today and having scrambling and getting some last-minute packing done, I completely skipped breakfast and lunch. So at the airport I had my usual coffee latte and consumed a tuna sandwich for late lunch. It was fine. Too much mayo though. My sister decided to get something sweet So I had a bite of chocolate cake and Sans Rival, a Filipino butter cake and buttery it was!

It didn't quite hit the spot. I was looking for something fruity, citrusy even! But what can you get at an airport except for airport food.

We arrived in Manila and my folks brought us out to dinner. We ate at a cook-your-own-food BBQ hot pot place. I'll be honest, I used to LOVE these kinds if restaurants but now I realize how poor the quality of produce, meat, and seafood is served.

Major TURN-OFF!

I admit, I didn't eat much. Most I had to spit out. The chicken broth was too salty so it was exactly hitting the spot.

The only that I found great was the banana I practically inhaled.

If there's one soup place I'd like to revisit it would be Pho Hoa. Vietnamese food is sooo delicious and refreshing!

Here's to (hopefully) better dining experiences! And to more runs!

Day 13 of 365: Today's Weigh-in

16th Dec. 2012
Starting Weight: 197 lbs.
TODAY's Weigh-in: 186 lbs (-2 lbs loss this week)
Total loss: -11lbs

I know this is good, this is healthy, this is ideal. I just can't help but feel a bit annoyed that my husband (who is even trying to lose weight) loss freakin 5 lbs!

But I'm getting there. Slowly. I've got to eat cleaner. I NEED that balance!

Happy Sunday!

...
FOLLOW-UP:

Today, I ate too much. BUT! I ran my last run for PODRUNNER WEEK 1 and next week will be even longer, even more intense intervals. BRING IT!

The festivities have just started and the fatty food keep coming.

I really felt like crap during my run! Maybe it was the excessive amount of Lattes and the fatty food. Yes it was all these things. Tonight's was a validation of it.

BUT

I HAD SOMETHING TO PROVE
To myself and to you, my beloved reader. I AM NOT A QUITTER, any longer.

I CAN RUN, I CAN MEET MY GOAL! So going back to Day 1: FUEL your RUN!

I mean it! I have to make better, cleaner choices.

Mantra: EAT CLEAN, RUN BETTER

Day 12 of 365: Parties & Holidays

15th Dec. 2012
Thank goodness for Veggies!

Today was the 27th Commencement at my Film School. It was a great day such an honor to have worked on two amazing films (one won BEST THESIS).

At the reception they had a lot of things; both fried and somewhat healthy. I just made sure that I'd only have one serving this time rather than my usual two...or three. I was too excited to feel hungry anyhow.

Later that evening the party did not end there. There was much merriment to do and feasting to have as well. We went to Ilaputi, the Asian Fusion Resto my hubby and I had gone to a few days back. As much as I wanted to try something new, I had to have that Beef Mediterranean salad and a half order or the MexCebuano. A little too oily this time around but delicious nevertheless.

The celebration contributes as we made our way to Krispie Kream. So what? A gingerbread man doughnut!

Big deal. Oh, and black coffee too? Fine!

Cause shortly after I power walked with the hubby and my sister and they couldn't keep up with me. Yes, allow me to gloat for a moment. I kept a steady pace and challenged myself to keep at it for as long as I could. There was no way this was just going to be a leisurely stroll! I was going to challenge them as well as myself. Plus, we sprinted. Although, I must admit didn't give t my 100%. I will let loose next time.

Post workout:
•banana
•Gatorade
•2 pcs white toast with Nutella and Peanut butter

Lots of water today! So proud! What a great day!

Day 11 of 365: Running Like a Champ

14th Dec. 2012
2nd Wind

It may seem like a lot but I really only had a few to nothing bites of everything I like today.

The important thing is CONTROL, PORTION CONTROL and yes, I can do that now.

After all, this fueled my AMAZING RUN this morning. 2AM while waiting for my a short film to upload on YouTube.

It can be rough at the start but you just have to keep pushing. I was happy on learn that my hubby has to keep up with me during the running intervals. Which reminds me, I can't recommend this enough:

Check out this great Podcast: http://www.djsteveboy.com/audio/intervals.xml

I'm on the 2nd day of Week 1 for the 5k program. It feels really good to move forward!

To motivate myself I had to give acknowledgement to all things painful. Like the tension in my legs, the aching of my knees. The heaviness of my breathing. Then follow it up with, "woah! Look how strong those legs are getting! Look how strong those arms are and how hardcore that core is!" Yes, I had to butter myself up.

Good thing I can actually say that and feel it too. The soreness of my 3- Set mini workout last night (Day 10) still aches. Think about it! A total of:
☑ 60 push ups
☑ :90 seconds of planking
☑ 60 Russian twists
I made sure I was giving it my all and it has paid off!

The run was nice today. Not as tired like Day 1. Shins didn't hurt as much and I made sure to maintain a steady pace regardless of my energy level (a pace which apparently has become too fast for some!).

Anyhow, happy weekend! Good luck on your races/long runs/workouts!

Day 10 of 365: Same Old Excuses

13th Dec. 2012
When the same old excuses arise...

Try fighting them!

I found myself trying to justify why I couldn't work out today...as well as last night. All due to cramming for that deadline/exam and not having enough sleep which is the case at the moment.

Though I may not go for my "2nd Day to a 5k Run" with the PodRunner program, I will do a quick circuit, 3-exercise routine to get my heart pumping and calories burning.

3 Sets of
☑ 20 Push-ups
☑ :30 sec Planks forward, left side, right side
☑ Russian Twists

Need this especially considering today's naughty and fast oily meal feast (see collage):

I know you see it. The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Almond bar peeking through. Staring at you in the face. And shamefully, I devoured the damn thing!

Only two meals today: breakfast at 10 am after my final and then at 8pm after performance night at school. Dinner with friends. Eating less and eating clean is a challenge. Yes, quite the gap between meals and quite the challenge.

Remember K, you put out what you put in...so no! You will not go to bed without exercising tonight.

Ive been bad. I know. But there was much napping involved in between and much editing to meet the deadline. So not much sleep from last night. None at all actually.

Tomorrow though is going to be better. Back to the swing of things. No more deadlines. No more cramming. Time to get serious.

I really have to mean it.
I DO.

JUST RUN!

Day 9 of 365: The Food War

12 Dec. 2012
Just a nibble right doesn't count right?

Think again. It does.

And I won't be surprised if it makes me feel über lethargic tonight.

I know better.

But why do I consume it anyhow? Well, let's start with my schedule for one: starting the day too late. Woke up late, headed out in a hurry. No breakfast. Wow! Doughnut! Nomnomom. Then ate some leftovers.

That's fine until I snacked on some cashews, and McDonald's!

Ugh! Disgusting!

Two: Thinking that working out will compensate. But the truth is I really need to balance that out. It goes hand in hand.

Okay.

So fine one cheat day is acceptable. But no more cheating!

...INNER MONOLOGUE....
Got it?
Roger that!
You're a runner now.
Yes I know.
So tomorrow you're going to think about the best way to fuel your run.
Yes!
Cause just think about those empty calories.
I know...tasted good though.
But remember how awful it makes you feel afterward?
*thinks about it* Yes. Not good.
Then don't EVER FORGET IT!
So about the cheat day...
Only if you make the right food choices throughout the week.
That's fair.
'Atta girl! Knew you'd see it my way!
Thanks.
No worries. Remember to stretch.

...END OF MONOLOGUE...

On the upside though I can be proud to say I was out running at 12:12 on 12.12.12!

...
Follow up on late night dinner. Decided to go for some Bibimbap.

...and the food war is not over.

Day 8 of 365: Motivation!

11th Dec. 2012
Food that tastes as bad as it looks

You may have noticed that I'm dedicating more time on food and my caloric intake than anything else. A bit disappointing, I know.

But I need to have this sort of visual representation at the moment. Simply because I'm struggling with motivation. Suddenly my mind is saying stop. Just eat.

No! And why am I listening?!

•A picture of a yucky 1st meal. Fried food! Noooo!
•Who says you can't get a semi-healthy meal at Sbarro? Garden salad with Italian dressing, fish in marinara
•Tried some Energen a cereal drink NEVER AGAIN! Not with 18g of SUGAR!
•spoiled with Food for the Gods, an iced caffe latte and movie theater popcorn (no salt!)

...
MIDNIGHT RUN

I've always loved DJ Steve's PodRunner Podcast on iTunes and since I'm at the point of basically starting slow and building my way up I decided to tune in.

☑ I completed THE FIRST DAY TO A 5K. Check out this great Podcast: http://www.djsteveboy.com/audio/intervals.xml

What I love about the program is that it goes on to 10k workouts and it makes a boring run quite exciting!

•the 1st and 2nd :30s runs felt good
•It wasn't until the 3rd that I was feeling the lactic acid burning my muscles, air bubbles forming near my ribs, a bit of cramping even.

But I wasn't going to be a baby about it.

I'M A RUNNER AFTER ALL!

So I just breathed through it. Keeping in mind all the prompts to go through when my body freaks out.

Check yourself and then calm down. Just breathe through it!

For tonight's post-workout nourishment:
•I had a banana, some non-fat milk, and 1 tsp. chunky peanut butter.
•1/2 of Pandesal (bread) with Peanut butter and mango jam
•Also took my multivitamin.

Still on an endorphin high. At this point nothing can stop me now! (Wow! Look at that sweat stain! Legit!!!)

Day 7 of 365: Water Please!

10th Dec. 2012
The benefits of water

I am almost positive that the 9lbs I have lost was also because of the fact that I cut out soda from my diet (well, except for last night's guilty pleasure).

So last night should have been the night of MORE running and as much as I would love to make excuses as to why I walked for a whole hour instead, I'm not going to.

This is me owning up to my own laziness.

This is me. Today.

On the upside, green tea, pesto tuna over brown rice grilled beef and veggies. What a good day to eat!

Day 6 of 365: The Problem with Pigging Out

9th Dec. 2012 | 8:33 PM
Pigging-Out

The problem with finding out you've lost some LBs is celebrating and overindulging.

My struggle is not quite getting a set routine which involves when and why I should eat. One thing that is constant though is working out. Thank goodness for that!

Yesterday, the SM cinemas were having a free movie day. So my husband and I had a nice date.

•It started with some wonderful Asian-Fusion at Ilaputi. I had the MexCebuano: Chicken breast marinated in Cebuano And Mexican spices over rice. Also had a delicious Greek-ish salad with a Vietnamese twist.

•Next up, my fave: non-fat iced coffee latte

•After an hour, half of a blueberry Danish and some refreshing mineral water with orange slices (I love it when restaurants are thoughtful like this) at the FRENCH BAKER, SM Cebu.

•Then some California Maki, miso soup, and gyros at Teriyaki Joe

•Finally some milk tea from Cobo's and some movie theater popcorn (no salt please!)

I never did get around to doing my circuit. But my husband and I walked that evening to make up somehow. It would have been nice though to burn some extra calories especially with my pigging out the next day as well.

...and here it is:

•Started out fine with some freshly pressed coffee (Christmas blend); fresh fruit: banana and mango; a bread roll or "pandesal" with mango jam; cereal and non-fat milk (do you sometimes mix your cereal? I do!)

•I really wanted to try some Korean cuisine and we did just that. While my husband and a friend of ours had the bulogi, I had bibimpap (with more veggies, an egg, and rice).
I overindulged consuming one and a half cups of rice.

•Followed by a peppermint mocha and a half a slice of mango cheesecake from Starbucks.

•Then as we went to visit with friends at school, I had my third, yes third cup of coffee with coffee mate and one teaspoon of brown sugar, a fish fillet and fries from McD's and washed it down with a cookie and Sprite (kill me now!)

So this coming week is the beginning of my work out plans. Time for making those better decisions and buckling down!

Come on K! You've come this far! No more cheat days! More workouts!

Day 5 of 365: Weigh-In

8th Dec. 2012
Starting Weight: 197 lbs.
TODAY's Weigh-in: 188 lbs
Total loss: -9lbs

I'm feeling really good right now.

Here's today's reminders:

This is just the beginning of course. Because it's going to get harder and become much more challenging especially when my body is used to being active.

Yes, I will hit a plateau and yes, it will be frustrating.

But that just means pushing harder and finding activities that will challenge me more. Plus, I'm starting my bodybuilding workout next week. Here we go!

In the mean time, here is today's workout:
☑ 20 jumping jacks
☑ 20 squats
☑ 20 mountain climbers
☑ 20 push-ups
☑ 20 lunges
☑ 20 overhead press (modified with use of bands
☑ AND :20 sec. Plan
☑ Plus: WALKING
'Cause next week I'm also starting my hardcore running program!

365 to CIM!
...and my beach body!

Day 4 of 365: Thinking Before Eating

7th Dec. 2012
8:24 PM
Soreness lives on!

Yesterday, I DID NOT work out and I will be hard on myself. That's NOT OKAY.

Reasons being:
1. I felt lazy after the movies ("Cloud Atlas" was so worth it though!)
2. I had movie popcorn (light butter, no salt)
3. Did I mention, lazy

Considering, I ate the almost healthy Caesar salad. (See photo)

I am making it a point to share now. Yes, sharing is not only caring but it is also a weigh-loss strategy. You can taste and not overindulge.

•So today, I had a wonderful breakfast consisting of a mushroom, tomato omelet with whole wheat and coffee (it in photo collage).

•Snacked on mangoes and bananas (photo courtesy of google since I forgot to take my own).

•Dinner was yummy Indian food and of course my second coffee for dessert non-fat coffee latte.

So today's goals or what's left of today:
◻ Now I've got to make sure to RUN and just when I think I need to slow down go for another 5 minutes longer
☑ Drink more water
☑ More fruits

Day 3 of 365: Feeling Sore

6th Dec. 2012
Feeling sore, but feeling stronger.

Last night I tried to eat the best I could but I know I indulged a bit. We found a Tex-Mex place here in Cebu.

Did I mentioned that I moved halfway across the globe to study filmmaking?

Oh, and that my sweetheart of 8 years and I finally tied the knot in April of this year!

Yes, what a good year it has been!
So, yes we had dinner with friends. I had the chicken burrito and salad and water. But then snacked just a tiny bit on chips and salsa. Had a bite or two on some onion rings. Had a mon-fat iced coffee latte at Starbucks, and had a bite of my husband's brownie.

Then I ran. Like hell. Or at least in between power waking intervals.

Today's goals:
☑ Do NOT over indulge
☑ Limit 1-2 cups of coffee today

Day 1 of 365: Babysteps

4th Dec. 2012
☑ Baby steps.

I remembered during my evening walk/run with my husband that my food definitely fuels my workout. So after having eaten so much excess crap from breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I was feeling a bit lethargic.

It wasn't until a good warm up that I got a second wind.

Running.

I remembered how and it felt great. But this time, I wasn't running on a treadmill in the gym. I was outdoors, on pavement, in the middle of a typhoon. AMAZING.

Run well!

My 365 Days Training for a Marathon Plan

December 4th marks my one year anniversary since running the California Internationl Marathon in Sacramento, Ca.

Since I finished 24 miles in 8 hours and never quite made it to the finish line, you can imagine the feeling of defeat and disappointment that I have endured since that painful race day.

Initially, it was exhilirating. I felt great, ready to go. Nothing was going to stop me. My sister joined me and being that we poorly trained, we really didn't know the caliber of what this feat was exactly.

Sure I've conquered a 5k.
Sure, I've completed a half marathon...but I should have taken this more seriously. Bottom line is:

I should have ran more.

So starting today, December 4th of this year (2012) I am challenging myself and anyone who would like to join me to do a 365 days bodybuilding and marathon training.

Inspired by Bodybuilding.com's FROM ZERO TO HERO 365 DAY MUSCLE BUILDING PLAN
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/go-from-zero-to-hero-in-one-year.htm

and

takethemagicstep.com's Run a Marathon in One Year: Long-term Training Schedule
http://www.takethemagicstep.com/coaching/families/training-exercise/run-a-marathon-in-one-year-a-long-term-training-schedule-for-beginners/

I HAVE DECIDED TO PREPARE AND TAKE THE LEAP (for the second time around). AND THIS TIME, I AM GOING TO CROSS THAT FINISH LINE! I'M GETTING THAT MEDAL.

Also, because I'm still quite a heavy-set girl, it is also my goal to at least lose 60 lbs in the process. I'm certain that I will with all the activities I plan to do but nevertheless, it is my goal and this time, instead of just writing about how my workout went, I need to set my goals. I need to set challenges for myself both mental and physical. I've been working out on and off but this time it's serious.

So here we go. The countdown begins! It all starts TODAY!
December 4th and join me in December 2013 for the CIA in Sacramento, CA

Training Day 87
